"Which iDrive do I have?" is the question we hear most often — and the answer decides everything that follows: whether CarPlay is possible, which FSC code you need and whether your maps can be updated at all. Good news: you can find it out in two minutes.
The three identification paths
VIN check (free, fastest), version display in iDrive, or the model and production year — each path identifies the unit reliably. The VIN is the most reliable: we see the exact factory equipment and can say immediately what is possible. The version display is right for a quick self-check.
- Path 1 — VIN: send it to us, answer within minutes (free)
- Path 2 — iDrive: Menu → Settings → Software update → Version
- Path 3 — Model: your BMW series + production year narrows it down
What the version number tells you
The numbers like "iDrive 6" or "iDrive 7" name the software, the unit behind it is decisive: NBT, NBT Evo, MGU. With the software version alone you can often already decide: iDrive 5/6 almost always means NBT Evo, iDrive 7/8 means MGU. If you are unsure, the VIN check settles it definitively.
One example of why this matters: a CarPlay activation costs CHF 349 and is tied to the unit. If the code is issued for the wrong generation, it is lost. That is exactly why we always check the VIN first — for the free consultation and for every order. The FSC hub and the price list show what is possible for your head unit.
Recognising the generation from outside
From outside, the controller and screen size reveal a lot about the generation. The large touch controller with palm rest belongs to NBT Evo or MGU; the classic rotary push controller without touch surface points to CIC or NBT. That is not always reliable — the software display in iDrive remains the only certain source, the VIN check the most convenient.
- Touch controller with palm rest: NBT Evo or MGU
- Classic rotary push controller: CIC or NBT (exceptions possible)
- Large screens from 10 inches: usually NBT Evo or MGU
- Most reliable source: Menu → Settings → Software update / Version info
Why the generation matters for buying
The generation decides activation options, map prices and retrofit effort. Anyone buying a used vehicle should know before purchase whether CarPlay can be activated and what map updates cost. These figures belong in the negotiation basis — a vehicle with CIC without CarPlay option is usually to be valued lower than one with activatable NBT Evo.
In short: the head unit generation is one of the few equipment questions you can answer yourself in two minutes — and one of the most important when it comes to CarPlay, maps and coding later. We help with the classification free of charge based on the VIN.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find out which iDrive I have?
The fastest way: send us the VIN (free check). Or look in iDrive: Menu → Settings → Software update → Version — the version number shown there identifies the unit (NBT, NBT Evo, MGU …).
Why does the iDrive version matter?
Because CarPlay, FSC codes and map updates are tied to the head unit generation. A code for NBT Evo does not work on MGU — the version decides which services are possible at all.
What is the difference between NBT and NBT Evo?
NBT is the navigation generation of 2011–2016, NBT Evo the evolution from 2016 with more memory, faster hardware and native CarPlay support. The visual difference: Evo units have a touchscreen, classic NBT is controlled by the iDrive controller.
