BMW CarPlay retrofit: costs & compatibility
How to activate Apple CarPlay in your BMW, what it costs and which models and head units are compatible — the honest overview.

Apple CarPlay is the most requested BMW retrofit — and usually the simplest: on NBT Evo and MGU units the function is already built in and only needs an activation code. No hardware, no removal, no risks.
Which BMW models are compatible?
All BMW models with NBT Evo (from 2016) and MGU (from 2018) are CarPlay-ready — the function just needs its FSC code. Older units (NBT, CIC, entry nav) do not support native CarPlay; there, a retrofit box unlocks it. We check your VIN first — so no guesswork about your specific model.
- NBT Evo (2016–2019): FSC activation, usually works wirelessly
- MGU (2018 onwards): FSC activation, wireless
- NBT / CIC (2011–2016): CarPlay box required
- Entry Nav: CarPlay box required
What does the activation look like?
You send us the VIN, we check your unit and issue the code, you enter it in iDrive — done. On site at our workshop in Ittigen (Bern) we take over the entry for you; remotely it takes about 15 minutes with your support. In both cases the complete function scope is released: Siri, maps, music, calls.
A common misconception: "CarPlay needs a subscription." No — the FSC activation is a one-time release that stays with the vehicle for its entire life. The price is CHF 349 flat, regardless of model, including the VIN check and support.
Wired or wireless? Both work. Wireless is standard on MGU and newer Evo units; if your unit is older, the box path includes wireless as standard. For prices and compatibility, see the FSC hub and the price list.
CarPlay or Android Auto — what is common at BMW?
CarPlay is the standard at BMW; Android Auto depends on model year and market. Since ID6, most systems support both — activation then covers both worlds, provided the function is intended for that vehicle. We check Android Auto support during the VIN diagnosis so you do not pay twice.
- CarPlay: standard at BMW since NBT Evo (ID5)
- Android Auto: model-year dependent — usually present from ID6
- Both together: one activation FSC usually covers both
- Check upfront: we tell you free of charge what your system can do
What changes after activation
After activation, CarPlay appears as an app in iDrive and runs in full screen. Navigation, music, phone and messaging then run through your iPhone — including Siri voice control. The BMW navigation remains untouched and works as before; you can switch between the two worlds at any time.
Practical note: CarPlay connects wirelessly or via cable, depending on the system and software level. After a vehicle software update the activation usually stays intact — we document every coding so it remains traceable. If anything is missing after an update, restoring it is part of our service.
The most common question before buying
The most common question: "Does CarPlay work in my vehicle at all?" The answer lies in the head unit generation: almost always yes from NBT Evo (2016), with CIC/NBT only via retrofit hardware. Send us the VIN — we check generation, software level and activation options free of charge and honestly tell you what is worth it and what is not.
Frequently asked questions
Can I retrofit BMW CarPlay?
Yes, in two ways: activation by FSC code (NBT Evo and MGU units) or, for older units without native support, a retrofit interface (CarPlay box). We check your exact equipment via VIN and tell you which path works.
What does BMW CarPlay cost?
The FSC activation is a flat CHF 349 for most NBT Evo / MGU units. Retrofit boxes start around CHF 450 including installation. A one-time payment — no subscription.
Does the warranty remain valid?
Yes. The activation is a manufacturer-approved code entry — no hardware change, no cable damage, nothing is opened. The function is simply released via the diagnostic interface.
