Coding Apps or Professional Service: What Each Can Do
An honest comparison between smartphone apps and manufacturer software — including the cases where an app is perfectly sufficient.
What apps can really do
Apps like Bimmercode, Carly or OBDeleven are good tools. They access the control units via a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi interface and change parameters there — technically the same thing as professional coding, just with a simplified interface.
For a clearly defined set of convenience features, that's perfectly adequate, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.
- Comfort open and close
- Mirror dip, indicator behaviour
- Startup screen, menu languages, seatbelt chime volume
- Remember start/stop preselection
Where apps hit their limits
| App | Manufacturer software | |
|---|---|---|
| Available features | Curated selection | All parameters of the control unit |
| Backup | Partial, often per module only | Complete, all control units |
| Retrofit new feature | No | Yes, including FA modification |
| Programming / software update | No | Yes |
| Modify vehicle order | No | Yes |
| Locked control units | No | Yes, via bench or boot |
The most important difference is in the last row of the "retrofit new feature" category. An app can flip an existing switch. It can't teach the vehicle that it now has a feature that isn't even listed in the vehicle order — for that, the vehicle order itself needs to be changed and the module re-synced.
Our recommendation
- You want two or three convenience tweaks and enjoy doing it yourself — go with an app
- You want to activate CarPlay, sport displays or retrofit a feature — that requires manufacturer software
- Your car is newer than roughly 2020 — check beforehand whether the app even supports your model
- You've already coded with an app and something behaves strangely — get in touch before you continue
No problem with app coding
If you've worked with an app before, just let us know. We read the full current state anyway. It's not about who did what before — it's about knowing the starting point.
