Why there is no standard price
The question comes in almost every first message: "What does it cost?" An honest answer needs two pieces of information — which vehicle, and which feature. The effort for the same activation varies significantly between a 2014 F30 and a 2023 G20, because the control unit architecture, software version and security measures have changed.
What determines the price ultimately comes down to four things: the iDrive generation, the number of control units involved, whether the work is done on-site or remotely, and whether a pre-diagnosis is needed.
- iDrive generation — CIC, NBT, EVO or MGU require different tools
- Number of control units — changing a display is different from a comfort package across five modules
- On-site or remote — travel takes time, remote saves it
- Pre-diagnosis — if there are existing fault codes, those need to be sorted first

What stands out is the jump between a single activation and a package: the package doesn't cost five times as much as a single feature, because the biggest part of the effort — backup, connection setup, security checks, test drive — only happens once. If you have multiple requests, a package is almost always the cheaper option.
Why CHF 30 offers often end up costing more
There are providers who advertise individual activations for CHF 30 to CHF 50. Technically, that's possible — the question is what gets left out.
- No backup of the original state — a clean return to factory settings is no longer possible
- No pre-diagnosis — existing faults remain and are later blamed on the coding
- Third-party or patched software instead of manufacturer tools
- No documentation — the next workshop has no idea what was changed
The expensive case
The most common repair job in this area: a control unit was flashed with a wrong dataset, there's no backup, and the restoration takes longer than the original coding would have cost. The CHF 80 savings then turns into an expense of several hundred.
