Coding, Programming, Flashing: What's the Difference?
Three terms that are constantly confused — yet they mean something technically very different. Including the risks of each.
The Three Terms
In everyday language, everything gets called "coding." Technically, though, these are three very different levels of intervention — each carrying very different risks.

Coding
Coding doesn't replace any software. The ECU already contains all functions; coding simply determines which of them are active. You're flipping switches — "CarPlay: off" becomes "CarPlay: on."
That's why coding is so low-risk: the underlying data set stays original, and only individual values within it change. A backup before the procedure restores the original state at any time.
Programming
Programming replaces an ECU's software entirely — typically to update it to a newer version or to adapt a replacement module to the vehicle.
This takes longer, requires a stable power supply, and must not be interrupted. If the process breaks off midway, the ECU can get stuck in a state from which it isn't easily recovered. That's why we always have a charger connected to the vehicle during any programming job.
Flashing
Flashing in the tuning sense means overwriting the engine ECU's maps — fuel injection, boost pressure, ignition timing, torque limits.
This is the only one of the three interventions that actually changes the mechanical load on the vehicle. Accordingly, it calls for a pre-check, a documented tune, and an open conversation about warranty, insurance, and homologation.
Why the distinction matters
If a provider sells chip tuning as "coding," that's either ignorance or deliberate misdirection. These terms stand for very different interventions — and very different consequences when it comes to warranty and vehicle registration.
